London has long been a source of inspiration for writers. From Shakespeare to Dickens and from Helen Fielding to Dan Brown the British capital has played out some of the most dramatic literary scenes to have ever appeared in print.
Whilst the landscape of London has changed over the years the sources of inspiration and the stories behind them are very much alive. Here we have listed a selection of literary tours that book worms can take in London which will help bring alive the classics they know and love.
Da Vinci Code London Tour
This is a 2 ½ hour walk organized by Brit Movie Tours which starts from Temple tube station and visits locations in both the Da Vinci Code book and the film. The multi million selling book spawned a lot of controversy when it was first published and on this tour the guide separates fact from fictions regarding aspects of the novel and its subsequent release as a movie. The tour route includes numerous famous landmarks along the way such as Whitehall, Trafalgar Square, The Strand and many other places of interest.
Shakespeare's and Dickens' London
Guided by an expert from London Walks this 2 hour walking tour looks at the importance London was to both Shakespeare and Dickens. London entranced both authors, who looked to the city and its people to base much of their work on. Using clever storytelling the tours guides find traces of their literary London that still exist in the city today. On the walk you will see everything from half-timbered Elizabethan dwellings to a beautiful early 16th-century gatehouse where Shakespeare visited with his newly written plays.
Sherlock Holmes Walk
Organised by Discovery Tours this is a walking tour with difference as it includes a whodunnit element to it. The guide will take you through a warren of alleyways where you are invited to solve a series of mysteries.
Sinister places beckon, dastardly villains await unmasking, and mysterious clues await your discovery on this adventure. You will literally become Holmes as clues are revealed but you'll have to use your wit and initiative.
