Is Spring The Best Season To Spend A Month Or More In Paris?

"April in Paris" is a ballad that probably inspired more spring vacations in the City of Light than any advertising campaign ever did, with its lyrical descriptions of "chestnuts in blossom" and "holiday tables under the trees." The fact is, April in Paris is generally chilly and rainy, and although the fabled chestnut trees are indeed blooming, along with lilacs and wisteria, one would probably rather avoid lunching under dripping trees.

On the other hand, May and early June fulfill every fantasy conjured by the words "Paris in the spring." Although sudden showers can always be expected, Parisians joyfully emerge from their winter hibernation to mingle with tourists during the balmy weather, enjoy leisurely strolls among the newly emerging flowers and, of course, chat and loiter over drinks at world-famous outdoor cafes. Naturally, the mass influx of tourists leads to a few negative consequences: longer lines at popular attractions, higher train and air fares and overbooked hotels, but those who opt for extended holidays in Paris usually find ways around these obstacles.

Visitors who plan to stay for a month or more often overcome the difficulty of booking hotel rooms by renting apartments. Cheap apartment rentals in Paris range from one-room studios to three-or-more-bedroom accommodations and are scattered throughout the city, mostly in highly desirable areas. The advantages of staying in an apartment include more space (even a studio apartment is generally larger than the average hotel room), privacy and fully equipped kitchens that provide considerable savings over restaurant meals.

Additionally, although some luxury apartments in Paris can run to the high four figures, many offer discounts for rentals of seven nights or more, as well as hotel-type amenities such as housekeeping, laundry, computer connections and concierge services. Catering to both families and corporations, Paris apartment rentals are often preferred over hotels by long-term visitors.

Paris in the spring offers a myriad of opportunities for unique outdoor activities, as well. From a trip to the Eiffel Tower to a stroll down the Champs Elysees to a tour of the Sorbonne and the Latin Quarter, one can scarcely turn a corner without encountering a stunning piece of French history. A close examination of the Arc de Triomphe alone can take the better part of an afternoon, while a more intrepid sightseer may fill the day with a funicular ride up to the basilica of the Sacre Coeur and top it off with a boat tour of the Seine for an unforgettable "journee de plaisir."
