Volterra is not one of the best-known settlements in Tuscany, however, it is certainly one of the most appealing. Of all of the hilltop towns in the region, there are few that can match it.
There are many reasons so many people decide to make their holidays in Tuscany; villas in this region provide visitors with rolling hills, exquisite landscapes, quaint architecture and a more relaxed way of life. Volterra has all of these in abundance, making it the ideal place to spend some quality downtime.

Discover the Museums
As well as simply admiring the surrounding landscape and the feel of the town, there are many things to see and do here to keep you busy. One of the best features of the town is that there are a number of interesting museums to visit depicting its fascinating Etruscan history, so make sure you check out a few of these if you can.
For example, the Museum of Sacred Art is just one of the museums in this tiny town in Tuscany. Villas located just outside the walls will allow you to be near many of the attractions, including this one found inside the Bishop's Palace. Inside you will find

artworks from the churches of the region and the cathedral, as well as stunning sculptures.
The Art Gallery and Civic Museum is also worth a look. It is housed in the Palazzo Minucci-Solaini in the centre of the town, and the building dates back to the 15th century. Inside there are paintings from around the area, and the building alone is worth the trip.
Other Attractions
Another attraction that you may want to visit is the town Duomo - you may see a number of these during your holiday in Tuscany. Villas near Volterra will give you access to explore this delightful cathedral - one of the most impressive buildings in the town. This Romanesque building dates back to the 12th century and boasts a large rose window as well as lots of artworks inside and a fresco.
You may also want to see the flag-throwing event if you are in the town during September. This is held each year and is one of the major events on the town's annual calendar. The tournament is called the Astiludio, and there are lots of costumes to admire and games to enjoy. It takes place in the spectacular Piazza dei Priori - which itself is a great place to visit at any time of the year.
Make Volterra Your Base in Tuscany
If you are considering your options for your holiday this year, you may well want to look into the possibility of staying in Volterra in Tuscany. Villas are found all over this wonderful region of Italy, but if you secure one in this gorgeous, history laden hilltop town you will be in for a real treat.
