Rome is fairly packed with ancient and classic sights for the eager visitor to discover and explore. From basilicas to squares and ancient structures to eye-catching fountains, you will most certainly never be bored when you visit this beautiful city. Walking in Italy really does come into its own when you decide to explore the capital on foot, and around every corner will be something new.

Here are some of the highlights you can expect to see while walking in Italy's capital, Rome.

The Coliseum
The Roman Coliseum is instantly recognisable to visitors from all over he world. It is one of the undoubted highlights of the city, dating back to the year 80 A.D. It is quite remarkable how much of the structure is still intact and standing. Many think it is circular but in fact it is an ellipse.

The Roman Forum
Otherwise known as the Forum Romanum, this is a huge complex that represents the centre of the ancient Roman city. You'll see arches, temples, churches and much more within this striking complex, and the reality of it is quite an experience - one you'll never forget.

The Trevi Fountain
The Fontana di Trevi is known for its apparent ability to guarantee a person can come back to the city. According to legend, if you throw a coin into the waters of the fountain you will return at some point in the future. Whether this is true or not, it is definitely worth making the effort to visit this impressive fountain, one that is much larger than you may think.

St Peter's Square
Walking in Italy can be tiring, but what better place could there be to stop and rest your feet for a while than St Peter's Square? This is where you will find St Peter's Basilica, perhaps the most famous [and impressive] of its kind in the world. Look for the Egyptian obelisk in the centre of the square, just one of the amazing sights worth seeing here.

These are just a few of the many landmarks worth seeing in Rome. Those who love walking in Italy will definitely enjoy the myriad opportunities offered in Rome. One thing always leads to another and even a simple visit to the Roman Forum can result in the discovery of many pathways to wander down and get lost in - in a good way of course! Rome is an ancient and mysterious city and much of its history is written in the architecture still visible today. Exploring it by foot will open up a small window into the past of this fascinating and important Italian city.
